Conquering the “Mountains” of Walt Disney World

Alright, thrill-seekers and roller coaster lovers, if you’ve ever wondered about the iconic “mountains” of Walt Disney World, then you’ve come to the right place. Sure, we’re not talking about real, snow-capped peaks here, but Disney’s theme parks are home to some of the most famous “mountains” you can conquer, and I’ve got the scoop on them!

Animal Kingdom: Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain

Let’s kick things off at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, home to the infamous Expedition Everest—a ride that takes you on a wild adventure up the Himalayan mountains. But, wait! There’s a catch. It’s not just any mountain—it’s the Yeti’s home, and you’re about to be chased by the world’s scariest snow beast as you zoom around steep drops, tight twists, and dark caves. It’s a thrill-a-minute coaster with a height requirement of 44 inches (so, sorry kids, no free rides unless they’re tall enough!).

What makes this ride extra special? The Yeti! Well…at least the remains of it. But be on the lookout for him as you race through the mountain—he’s a little shy but super creepy! Expedition Everest is definitely not for the faint of heart, but for coaster enthusiasts, it’s a must-do.

Magic Kingdom: The “Other” Mountains

While Animal Kingdom has Expedition Everest, Magic Kingdom isn’t exactly left out when it comes to mountainous thrills. In fact, Magic Kingdom used to have three major “mountains” (thanks, Splash Mountain, for the memories…), but since that’s no longer on the roster (check out my earlier blog post on the reimagined Tiana’s Bayou Adventure), we’re down to two. But trust me, these two are legends in their own right.

1. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad – “The Wildest Ride in the Wilderness!”

First up is Big Thunder Mountain Railroad—a classic train ride through a haunted gold mine in Frontierland. This ride is a family-friendly roller coaster that doesn’t have the stomach-dropping moments of some of the park’s other coasters, but don’t let that fool you—it’s still a blast! You’ll zip through tunnels, around cliffs, and feel the thrill of being on a runaway mine train. The best part? If you’re 40 inches or taller, this one’s for you!

And hey, did you know that each train car on Big Thunder Mountain has its own unique name? They’re all hilarious puns, so be sure to keep an eye out for the names when you board. It’s one of those hidden details that makes Disney magic even more magical.

2. Space Mountain – A Journey into the Dark Unknown!

Next, let’s head to Tomorrowland and get ready to blast off into space on Space Mountain. This roller coaster takes you on an intergalactic adventure inside a dark dome with tight twists and turns. It’s fast, it’s thrilling, and you’ll feel like you’re zooming through the stars with the whole universe at your back.

Space Mountain isn’t exactly for the faint of heart either, but if you’re a thrill-seeker who loves speed and surprises (and can handle a few crazy dips), then this one’s for you. Just be sure you’re over 44 inches tall—you don’t want to miss out on this space-bound journey!

The “Mountain” That’s Not a Mountain: Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

Okay, so technically this one isn’t one a mountain but does take place within one. For that reason, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train in Fantasyland has taken the place of Splash Mountain and honestly, it’s too fun not to mention. It’s more of a roller coaster for the whole family—think small drops, gentle turns, and a unique swaying motion. It’s definitely a more tame option than Everest or Space Mountain, making it perfect for younger riders (with a 38-inch height requirement).

What makes this ride stand out, though, is its adorable theme—based on Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The ride is full of colorful visuals, the catchy “Heigh-Ho” song, and, of course, the Seven Dwarfs themselves. If you haven’t had the chance to hop aboard yet, don’t miss it!

My Personal “Mountain” Challenge: A Family Affair

Okay, so here’s a little personal confession: my husband and I make it a point to conquer all of Disney World’s mountains during each trip. We’ve been on Expedition Everest, Space Mountain, and Big Thunder Mountain multiple times, and let me tell you—it never gets old. But we have one little hiccup…our daughter.

While my husband, 13-year-old son and I are ready to take on Everest again, my 10-year-old has zero interest in the Yeti chase. But she’s totally into the other mountains (minus Space Mountain, which is a whole other conversation).

As much as I love these rides, I couldn’t find any photographic proof of us riding Expedition Everest on our last trip (don’t worry, I’m totally blaming the Yeti for that one). But trust me, we’ve been on it! As for Big Thunder Mountain, they don’t offer an on-ride photo, so you’ll just have to take my word for it.

Your Mountain Adventure Awaits

So, whether you’re a first-timer or a Disney regular, conquering the “mountains” of Walt Disney World is an absolute must. Each one brings its own flavor of thrills and excitement, with something for every type of adventurer. From the steep drops of Expedition Everest to the charming, family-friendly ride of Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, these rides are some of the best Disney has to offer.

As always, I’m here to help you plan your next Disney trip—mountains, Yeti sightings, and all. So, grab your gear, pack your courage, and let’s make some epic memories together!
